Feeling Sleepy During the Day?

Fotolia_170539828_XS.jpgEveryone gets sleepy to some extent in the daytime. Whether long nights with kids, staying up too late to catch the end of a game, or an all-nighter for work or school, there are lots of things in our lives that can keep us from getting the sleep we need. Problems occur when occasionally nodding off during the day becomes an every day struggle, and the consequences are far more dangerous than decreased productivity at work. Causes for regular daytime drowsiness can include snoring, sleep apnea, and other sleep disorders, which can result in medical illnesses including hypertension, heart attack, abnormal heart rhythm, diabetes, weight gain, and more.

If daytime sleepiness is an issue for you or your bed partner, you need to be checked out. How do you know if this is an issue for you or your partner? The Epworth Sleepiness Scale is a good place to start. Developed by Dr. Murray Johns of Melbourne, this questionnaire measures daytime sleepiness.

How likely are you to doze off or fall asleep in the following situations, in contrast to feeling just tired? This refers to your usual way of life in recent times. Even if you have not done some of these things recently try to work out how they would have affected you. Use the following scale to choose the most appropriate number for each situation:

0 = no chance of dozing
1 = slight chance of dozing
2 = moderate chance of dozing
3 = high chance of dozing
